The Benefits of Using Mason Jars to Store Fruit Rather Than Their Original Packaging

Even while I adore having fruit on hand, it always seems to have started to rot by the time I get home from the supermarket, which is a major bummer. Luckily, there’s a fantastic storage trick that can make your fruit last much longer and taste much better.

Before you even think about recycling the plastic packaging your fruit came in, make sure you remove them from the store. The next step is to fill a big bowl or your sink with water once you have cleaned it out. Add a couple teaspoons of distilled vinegar after that. The next step is to add the fruit to the water and continue soaking for another 10 to 15 minutes. The goal is to eliminate any germs or mold that may have settled on the fruit, since this speeds up their rotting process.

After the fruit has soaked in the vinegar water for a while, take it out, put it in a strainer, and then rinse it under cold water. Spread a paper towel or tea towel over the fruit and set it aside to dry. When the fruit is completely dry, place it in mason jars and cover them tightly. This is the most effective method for extending the shelf life of fruit, especially berries, which are very susceptible to the growth of germs and mold.

I think that’s everything! You can cut down on food waste, save money, and extend the shelf life of your perishables by adding a few extra steps to the process of preparing and storing fruit. On Sunday, when I go food shopping, I will absolutely use this way to prepare and store our fruit!

Mason jars aren’t the best way to keep fruit fresh all year round.
