Crispy fried mushrooms

Prepare three bowls for breading: one with seasoned flour, another with beaten eggs (or plant-based milk), and the third with bread crumbs mixed with additional seasonings for flavor.

Coat each mushroom piece in the flour, ensuring an even layer. Shake off any excess before dipping it into the egg mixture.

Allow the excess egg to drip off before rolling the mushroom in the bread crumb mixture. Press gently to ensure the coating sticks.

Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be hot enough that a small piece of bread sizzles and browns within seconds.

Carefully place the breaded mushrooms into the hot oil, ensuring they don’t overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches if necessary to maintain even cooking.

Allow the mushrooms to fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally to ensure all sides are cooked evenly. This should take about 3–4 minutes per batch.

Use a slotted spoon to remove the mushrooms from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Serve the crispy fried mushrooms immediately while they’re hot and crunchy. Pair them with your favorite dips, such as ranch, aioli, or spicy marinara sauce, for added flavor.

How to Make

To create a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free alternative and use gluten-free bread crumbs.

For a vegan-friendly option, replace eggs with a mixture of plant-based milk and a tablespoon of cornstarch for binding.

Experiment with different mushrooms for unique flavors and textures. Portobello mushrooms offer a meaty texture, while shiitake mushrooms provide a rich, umami flavor.

Enhance the flavor profile by adding herbs like thyme or rosemary to the bread crumb mixture.

Make a spiced version by incorporating curry powder or smoked paprika into the seasoning.

Prepare a batter instead of a dry coating by mixing flour, water, and seasonings into a thick paste. Dip the mushrooms in the batter and fry as usual for a different texture.

For air fryer enthusiasts, lightly spray the breaded mushrooms with cooking oil and air fry at 375°F until golden and crispy.

Pair crispy fried mushrooms with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables for a balanced meal.
