To maintain your freezer and increase its lifespan, it is important to defrost it when it becomes necessary.
This is because the frost that accumulates on the walls of your freezer affects the performance of your equipment.

The frost forms at each opening of your freezer when the moisture infiltrates the inside of your freezer. So even fresh food stored in our freezer can release moisture.
When in contact with the cold, this humidity is transformed into frost which accumulates on the walls of the freezer. If it is not equipped with an automatic de-icing system, it becomes essential to defrost it manually.
Why is it important to de-icer the freezer?
When the frost accumulates on the walls of the freezer, it forms an insulating layer which causes a drop in heat transfer between the air inside the freezer and the refrigeration system.
That said, in order for your household appliance to keep the indoor temperature at the same level, it needs to consume more energy.
In addition to over-consumption of energy, the accumulation of frost leads to poor food preservation and reduces the life of the freezer.
Also note that a layer of frost of only 3 millimetres increases the power consumption of the freezer by 30 to 40%. However, it is recommended to de-icer the freezer as soon as the layer of frost reaches 2 to 3 millimeters.
How to defrost the freezer quickly?
Also consider emptying your freezer and storing your food in coolers or insulated bags, so that you can keep them frozen for time to defrost your appliance.
Be careful to avoid using a hammer or sharp objects to dislodge the ice. This could pierce or puncture the walls of the freezer.
Instead, prefer a wooden or plastic spatula. Also, do not forget to put a mop at the foot of the freezer to clamp the water that will flow.
If the layer of frost is not thick, you can simply keep the freezer door open, after disconnecting it for 24 hours. The lack of electricity and the rising temperature will lead to melting of the ice.
